The Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa lets eligible international graduates live, study and work in Australia for a limited period. From 1 July 2024, the program was realigned. • Streams were renamed to fit qualification levels:

  • Post‑Vocational Education Work (formerly Graduate Work)
  • A Second Post‑Higher Education Work option exists for those who studied and lived in eligible regional areas.
• Age settings tightened for most applicants.
• English and documentation standards are tougher than before.
• The Replacement stream has closed to new applicants.

Tips: If you’re finishing a degree in 2025, plan your 485 well before your student visa ends. Book English tests early, gather police clearances and health checks, and keep your OSHC/OVHC sorted.

• A recent Australian qualification from a CRICOS‑registered provider.
• To meet the Australian study requirement (generally two academic years of study, or 92 weeks, — often completed across one or more qualifications).
• Apply within the specified window after your course completion and while holding or having recently held a student visa.
• Meet English language, age, health, and character requirements for your chosen stream.

• Post‑Higher Education Work (degree level and above): Most bachelor’s, master’s and PhD graduates use this. Length of stay depends on your qualification level and where you studied.
• Post‑Vocational Education Work (diploma/trade/associate degree): For grads with VET-level awards closely related to an occupation on the medium/long-term skills lists.
• Second Post‑Higher Education Work: For eligible regional Australia graduates who meet residence and study rules.

1. Final semester (T‑4 to T‑3 months):
   Book English test dates; check your passport validity; request an official completion letter timeline from your uni.
2. T‑8 to T‑6 weeks:
   Gather police certificate(s), health exam booking, updated CV.
3. After course completion:
   Wait for the official completion/award advice, then apply promptly within your allowed window.
4. After lodgement:
   Monitor ImmiAccount; respond to any requests; arrange OVHC for the bridging/485 period.

Can I include my spouse?

Generally yes if you meet relationship evidence rules. Processes and finances apply.

Do I need a job offer?

Not to apply, but your employment during 485 should align with visa conditions and your career goals.

What about PR?

485 isn’t permanent residence, but it can be a stepping stone (skills assessments, skilled visas, employer sponsorship, regional pathways).
